Web bugs are often referred to as miniature picture images, often in GIF format which are usually embedded without proper identification on what they really are. For some, it is a transparent marketing tool that helps spread the word on certain business and services. However, it also monitors the people who view it, tracking the traffic and views that it solicits as well.

A web bug can be usually found anywhere. It ranges from being present in e-mails to websites. The most fascinating attribute is that it cannot be seen. They are usually transparent web trackers to which no one would even notice that they are indeed installed and tracking your origin or IP address.

A lot of people and groups are using the web for business. Web bugs are surely among their tools considering they are pretty much concerned about the wave of traffic and the degree of hits it produces. Many would question its legality but as long as there is no mischief intended, they are deemed safe for now.

So while others are happy viewing pages, there is that tiny invisible picture graphic that is monitoring people who are viewing it. Some would be amazed while others would be wary of potential security breaches that may be caused by these web bugs. Ideally, they are harmless. But if people would start to become creative and find extensive use of these web bugs, then chances are you should look again.

A web bug’s use as a marketing tool is brilliant. If you come to think of it, you can gauge and measure if your website is indeed living up to its purpose. Some sites are quite particular about page views and while others use counters, an installed web bug can offer a more conventional way of monitoring activities and their points of origin.

Good or bad, web bugs have a purpose to help webmasters on their needs. It all depends on what the real intent truly is.
