Spyware is a problem for computer users everywhere on the internet. It is software that acts like a virus once it gets into your computer causing all kinds of problems. Spyware can keep track of nearly everything you do on your computer from the web sites you visit to taking copies of your hard drive documents and sending them back to the originator of the spyware the next time you get online. Pretty scary stuff when you think about how much sensitive information is on your computer. Spyware should not be taken lightly.
All those annoying pop ups you get on your screen when you are surfing the net are actual pop up software trying to see if you will allow them to enter your machine. That is the difference between spyware and viruses. Although the two are very similar you have to click OK for spyware to enter your pc. If you don’t it can’t get onto your machine but be careful here. Do you know all of those pop ups offering to get rid of your spyware? That’s right, many of them are in fact spyware themselves like a wolf in sheep’s clothing trying to gain access to your machine.
Much of the time advertisers use the spyware to deliver their message sending you a bulletin like announcement you can see quickly and get rid of. Most web browser and internet connections now scan for pop ups and powerful software has been written to block the pop ups. Pop up blockers are now common place screening your internet viewing and trying to keep potential spyware from gaining access to your machine. Legitimate companies do send pop ups through non-invasive pop ups but for the most part it really is like internet junk mail that is trying to find a way onto your desktop and beyone.
The real problem with spyware is that it gets into your system and scours your information on your hard drive trying to find your passwords, bank accounts, and other data that allows hackers to go in and remove money from your accounts or purchase things from different web sites using your information. A simple virus detection program is not sophisticated enough to go in and remove all spyware. Some will detect it and let you know they removed it when in fact they have not gotten it all. Many of the major anti-virus programs do have spyware detection and removal sub programs in their architecture and these programs do a pretty good job of removing your spyware. Make sure you keep your anti-virus program up to date and that you are checking your machine at lease weekly doing a deep scan of your hard drive and documents to make sure no one has snuck in through the back door and planted spyware on to your machine.
